Silence Enables: ADSC President Demands Swift Action on South African Xenophobia
Sir Victor Walsh Oluwafemi, President of the Africa Development Studies Centre, has warned of a surge in xenophobic attacks and anti-migrant hostility in South Africa. He urges governments to respond before violent incidents escalate. He highlights reports of intimidation and disruptions to migrant-owned businesses, especially those of Nigerian nationals, and cautions that silence could legitimize and institutionalize such behavior. Oluwafemi calls on the South African government to enforce the rule of law, curb vigilantism, and protect fundamental rights. He also appeals to the African Union to adopt stronger measures against xenophobia and safeguard migrant communities. He stresses that Nigeria must move beyond reactive consular support to strategic diplomacy. He encourages public figures and cultural leaders to promote unity and resist divisive rhetoric, warning that inaction could undermine regional cooperation and Africa’s integration agenda.
