Nigerian Taxi Driver Jailed in UK After Fatal Crash Caused by Falling Asleep

A Nigerian taxi driver, Kolawole Erunkulu, has been sentenced to six years in prison in the UK after falling asleep at the wheel and causing a fatal crash on the A23 in Surrey. The collision happened near Merstham shortly before 6:30am on 17 August. Erunkulu’s Audi reportedly crossed the carriageway and struck a Volkswagen driven by Philip Dray, who died in the crash. In-car footage reportedly showed Erunkulu falling asleep before the collision. Employment data also indicated that he had driven for about 53 hours in the three days leading up to the crash. He pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and was banned from driving for eight years.
