Aviation Minister Reveals Nigeria’s 240 Private Jets Lead Africa, Eyes Local Bombardier Service Hub
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development has confirmed that Nigeria operates around 240 private jets, the highest figure on the continent. He shared the update while meeting global aircraft manufacturers, including Bombardier, in Canada. Discussions focused on establishing a Bombardier maintenance centre in Nigeria. Such a facility would cut overseas service costs, conserve foreign exchange, create skilled jobs and position Nigeria as a regional aviation hub. Industry data shows private jet numbers in Nigeria rose from about 100 in 2021 to 240 today. Around 70% are foreign-registered and often used for unlicensed charter flights, prompting a ministerial probe. The government now aims to strengthen regulation and support local operators through modernisation and strategic partnerships. Senior aviation officials joined the minister to explore fleet modernisation, maintenance, repair and overhaul services (MRO), aviation training and technology transfer. The Tinubu administration says these moves will boost safety, efficiency and the long-term growth of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
