Should NIMC Data and NIN Replace Separate Voter Registration?
I was impressed by the recent voter-registration breakdown released by the INEC chairman. It included age groups, persons with disabilities, people with autism and unemployed registrants. In my view, this type of national demographic data should be published regularly by NIMC, perhaps every quarter. NIMC already works through private enrolment centres that handle services such as SIM swaps and NIN updates. I know of at least two such centres in Ijebu Jesa. With proper training and oversight, I believe these centres could support voter registration and even some election-related processes without requiring a large new workforce. Ideally, a NIN should serve the same identification purpose as a voter card. Citizens should also update their NIN details when they move, change jobs or experience other major changes. Regular NIMC data on adults, deaths, employment status, locations and foreign residents could help government planning while reducing duplication between agencies.
