FG Orders Polytechnics to Phase Out Non-Technical Courses
The Federal Government has directed polytechnics to gradually phase out non-technical programmes that fall outside their statutory mandate. Education Minister Tunji Alausa said the institutions should refocus on applied sciences, engineering, technology, innovation and other practical skills. He said technical and vocational education is a national economic priority, not a second-choice route to university education. The government wants to produce more technicians, technologists, artisans, fabricators, automation specialists and other skilled workers needed for industrial growth. The minister also asked the NBTE Governing Board to modernise curricula around digital technology, artificial intelligence, automation, green technology and advanced manufacturing. He urged faster implementation of the Recognition of Prior Learning framework so skilled artisans can have their competencies formally certified. The Board said it would work to change the public perception of technical education and promote it as a respected route to employment, entrepreneurship and national development.
