NUC Says Tansian University Ltd/Gte Was Never Licensed as Proprietor, Suspends Admissions
The National Universities Commission (NUC) says Tansian University Ltd/Gte was never issued a licence to operate Tansian University in Umunya, Anambra State. The commission maintains that the recognised proprietor remains the Incorporated Trustees of Missionary Servant of the Church. According to the NUC, the university received its temporary licence in 2007 and permanent licence in 2014 under the original ownership arrangement. It said registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission does not automatically transfer ownership or give a company authority to appoint the university’s governing bodies. The regulator said there is no evidence that the original proprietor transferred its rights to the company or that a court lawfully vested ownership in it. It also described the ownership and governance dispute as a threat to effective learning, staff and student safety, and relations with the host community. The NUC has directed JAMB to suspend candidate placements into all programmes at the university. It also suspended pending accreditation exercises until the governance crisis is resolved.
