Should Political Loyalty Ever Come Before Christian Conviction?
Some Nigerian Christians appear to defend politicians more passionately than the values they profess. Corruption allegations, broken promises and harmful policies are often excused when they involve a preferred candidate or party. Supporting a politician is not wrong. Christians are citizens and can support candidates and policies that reflect their convictions. The concern begins when party, ethnic or political loyalty makes it impossible to admit that a preferred leader has acted wrongly. A Christian should be able to say, “My preferred politician is wrong on this issue,” without seeing honest criticism as betrayal. The same standard should apply to allies and opponents, especially during elections, public controversies and debates over government policies. Can Nigerian Christians put truth, justice and Christian conviction above political, ethnic and party loyalty?
