NCDC Reports Over 65,000 Suspected Cholera Cases Across 35 States

Nigeria has recorded more than 65,000 suspected cholera cases this year across 35 states and about 195 local government areas, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency said Enugu is the only state yet to report a cholera case this year. NCDC Director-General Jide Idris attributed this to the state government’s proactive public-health measures, dismissing claims that cases could be concealed. Idris urged state governments to improve disease surveillance, preparedness, access to safe water and sanitation. Cholera spreads through food or water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae and usually increases during the rainy season. The NCDC also stressed the need for early detection and prompt treatment to reduce deaths and stop further transmission in affected communities.
