Kogi Defends University Fee Review as Students Seek Reduction
Kogi State officials have defended a review of fees at state-owned tertiary institutions, saying it is part of a policy to harmonise charges. The Commissioner for Education and the Vice Chancellor of Prince Abubakar Audu University explained the decision during a House of Assembly committee hearing on a petition about fee increases at the university and Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja. The Vice Chancellor said the university was implementing a state directive and noted that 4,032 students had been approved for Nigerian Education Loan Fund support, with ₦562 million cleared for payment. Another 600 applications were being processed. The polytechnic’s rector said his institution had not increased fees and had instead reduced accommodation charges. Student leaders asked lawmakers to urge Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo to consider a slight fee reduction to ease the burden on students and parents. The committee requested further documents and said it would examine the petition.
