Did Mark the Apostle Bring Christianity to Egypt Around AD 40? The Story of Anianus
Coptic tradition says Mark’s first convert in Alexandria was Anianus, a shoemaker. According to the story, Mark’s sandal broke, and Anianus injured his hand while repairing it. Mark healed the wound in Jesus’ name, preached to him, and Anianus and his household were baptized. Anianus is said to have succeeded Mark as bishop of Alexandria around AD 62. The account appears in the later Acts of Mark and is considered hagiographic, so historians cannot verify the healing story. Eusebius does name Anianus as Mark’s successor. Do you believe the story? A commenter also notes that saliva can introduce germs into a wound. For an injury, basic care includes cleaning it, applying pressure, covering it, and checking whether a tetanus shot is needed.
