German Envoy Visits Yelwata Massacre Site, Pledges Safety and Support for Displaced Residents
The German government has reaffirmed its commitment to help Nigeria tackle insecurity and promote peaceful coexistence. Commissioner for Freedom of Religion or Belief Thomas Rachel spoke after a fact-finding visit to Yelwata community and nearby IDP camps in Abuja. Rachel described the scene in Yelwata—where over 200 people were killed in a 2025 attack—as deeply moving. Survivors remain fearful and called for safety, humanitarian aid, and the chance to return to their ancestral homes. The envoy noted that violence in Nigeria cuts across religious lines and stressed solidarity with both Christian and Muslim communities. He also raised concerns about the selective enforcement of blasphemy laws in parts of northern Nigeria. While Germany will not deploy troops, it will continue military training and advisory support through the Bundeswehr. Lasting peace, Rachel said, depends on unity, dialogue, and sustained government action to restore confidence and enable safe return for displaced families.
