Lionel Messi Announces Retirement From Argentina After 20-Year International Career

Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from Argentina’s national team after a 20-year international career. The 39-year-old captain said the decision was painful but necessary after the 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain. Messi said he had written his farewell message shortly after the final and was further convinced after the death of his father, Jorge Messi. He thanked his family, coaches, teammates and supporters for standing by him throughout his journey. The forward leaves after leading Argentina to the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa América. He said he would continue supporting the national team from outside the squad while a new generation of players takes its place.
