Court Remands Ekiti ADC House of Assembly Candidate Over Alleged Rape; Party Alleges Political Motive
An Ado Ekiti Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand of Ayodele Babatola, the African Democratic Congress candidate for Ado Constituency 1, over allegations of rape. The alleged incident occurred at KIIBAT Hotel in Ado-Ekiti on May 24, 2026, when a 30-year-old woman accused Babatola of forcefully having sexual intercourse. Police say injuries observed on the complainant were confirmed by a medical examination. Babatola denies penetration, claiming the encounter ended when the woman demanded payment. He was arrested by the Nigeria Police Force in Ekiti State, questioned, and the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department. He remains in custody at the Ado Ekiti correctional facility pending further proceedings. ADC members protested on May 27, calling the detention politically motivated. At a press conference, party chieftain Gboyega Aribisogan accused the state’s Rapid Response Squad of targeting opposition figures and government critics through remand procedures.
