NELFUND Warns Schools Against Tuition Hikes, May Withhold Loan Payments
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has warned tertiary institutions against raising tuition fees unfairly because of the student loan scheme. NELFUND says schools with inflated charges risk having their loan payments withheld. The agency said it has introduced guidelines to prevent institutions from exploiting the scheme. Some schools reportedly reversed fee increases after NELFUND declined to pay charges considered unreasonable. NELFUND also said upkeep allowances are paid directly into students’ accounts, although verification delays by institutions can slow disbursement. The fund says between 850,000 and 900,000 students have received upkeep support, while over ₦322 billion disbursed under the scheme is electronically traceable.
