Passion Play Actor Dies After Cannon Malfunctions in Cross River
Michael Nnanke Obeten, a Mass Communication graduate of UNICROSS and veteran Passion of Christ performer, died when a locally made cannon misfired during a Good Friday rehearsal in Ugep, Yakurr LGA. The device was intended to create a thunder effect at Station 12 of the drama. The sharp iron casing struck Obeten’s head and caused severe brain injuries. He was rushed to surgery but did not survive. The alumni association says unlicensed individuals handled the cannon. Obeten’s former classmates call the tragedy preventable. They demand a full investigation and prosecution of those responsible. They also urge a ban on firearms and similar devices at public religious and cultural events. The group warns that without stricter enforcement of licensing laws, more lives could be at risk. They say this incident exposes a growing safety crisis at gatherings nationwide.
