FG Begins Assessment for Proposed Multipurpose Dam in Plateau’s Kanke

The Federal Government has begun preliminary work on a proposed multipurpose dam in Gile, Kanke Local Government Area of Plateau State. The project is expected to improve access to drinking water, irrigation, livestock water supply, flood control and potentially electricity for Gile and nearby communities. Officials say it could also support roads, jobs and other rural infrastructure. Water Resources Minister Joseph Utsev said the visit was for site assessment. Technical teams will next conduct feasibility studies and prepare designs to determine the dam's size, cost and construction timeline. Community leaders and Plateau State officials said the project could ease long-standing water shortages and strengthen farming and livestock production in Kanke and adjoining local government areas.
