Family Demands Justice After Garbage Truck Accidentally Crushes Unhoused Woman
Tyrah Adams, a 35-year-old unhoused woman, died after a garbage truck’s hydraulic claw accidentally picked her up and crushed her in an alley. The incident occurred during routine trash collection on Feb. 12, 2026, when operators did not see her. After being released from the claw, she managed to walk to a nearby convenience store. Employees and a customer called 911 when she collapsed at the entrance. She later died in hospital from blunt force and compressional trauma, the coroner confirmed. Her family’s attorney says investigators have not yet reviewed footage from the truck’s external camera or nearby surveillance, and one internal camera had been covered. The family is preparing legal action against the city for what they describe as a preventable tragedy. The city’s Public Works department placed the two truck operators on leave while the case remains under review.
