Calling Tony Elumelu “Tony”: A Lesson in Workplace Culture, Not Character

Calling Tony Elumelu “Tony”: A Lesson in Workplace Culture, Not Character

The viral video of a UBA graduate trainee addressing Tony Elumelu as “Tony” has sparked intense reactions online. While he corrected her and asked to be called “Mr Elumelu” or “TOE,” I do not believe the incident proves she lacks home training or emotional intelligence. Yes, she made a mistake and could have read the room better. Formal corporate settings have expectations around hierarchy, titles and professional communication. But banking workplaces can also encourage staff to use first names, even when speaking to senior executives. She may simply have acted according to the culture she knew. The lesson should be about awareness and professionalism, not public attacks on a young person starting her career. We all make mistakes, get corrected and grow. Young professionals should learn to observe workplace culture, while leaders and the public should also extend grace.
