The Holy Escape: Joseph’s Flight to Egypt (Matthew 2:13–18)
In Matthew 2:13–18, an angel appears to Joseph in a dream and warns him to flee to Egypt with Mary and the child. Herod seeks to kill the newborn king. Joseph obeys at once, travelling by night with his family. They stay in Egypt until Herod’s death, fulfilling the prophecy “Out of Egypt I called my son.” When Herod realises he has been outwitted by the Magi, he orders the massacre of all boys in Bethlehem aged two and under. This tragic act fulfils Jeremiah’s words: “Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted.”
