Tinubu Confirms He Will Miss UNGA Again, Shettima to Lead Nigeria’s Delegation
President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. He has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation instead. Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate, scheduled for September 22 to 28, 2026. The delegation will also include Governors Siminalayi Fubara and Dauda Lawal, as well as ministers and other senior officials. Nigeria is expected to hold meetings on climate action, development, economic diplomacy and reform of the global financial system. This will be Tinubu’s third consecutive absence from the UN General Assembly since taking office in 2023.
