1 / 2

The Ebonyi State House of Assembly Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources has commended the IFAD Value Chain Development Programme for supporting rural farmers and improving rice and cassava production in the state. During an oversight visit to the programme office in Abakaliki, the committee said it would support policies and legislation to preserve the gains of the intervention after the programme closes. Lawmakers also called for the scheme to be extended to more local government areas. The programme coordinator said IFAD-VCDP operates in eight LGAs across Ebonyi’s three senatorial zones. Of 23,163 profiled farmers, 18,083 had received support as of December 31, 2025. The intervention includes rural roads, bridges, boreholes, irrigation facilities, processing centres, a seed laboratory, farm inputs and farmer business schools. The coordinator urged the Assembly to establish a state agency that can take over and sustain the programme’s agricultural and rural-development projects.
