Kanye West Takes the Stand in Hurricane Copyright Lawsuit

Kanye West Takes the Stand in Hurricane Copyright Lawsuit — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Rapper Kanye West testified in a Los Angeles federal court over claims he used part of a track without permission in his 2021 single Hurricane. Producers behind MSD PT2 allege West incorporated their work at a July 2021 listening event in Atlanta. West denied wrongdoing, saying he followed standard clearance processes and has always been generous to collaborators. He told jurors that some producers delayed clearances and sought unfair royalty percentages. West’s team previously won a partial victory when a judge narrowed the case to sample rights rather than compositional rights. This marks the first time West has defended a copyright suit at trial after more than a dozen similar filings, according to media reports.
