Why Churches Need Space for Communal Lament and Sexual Purity Struggles

Communal lament makes room for believers to grieve together over the harm caused by sexual sin and the difficulty of pursuing purity. It reminds people that they are not alone in a struggle that is often hidden by shame. While testimonies of victory are valuable, not everyone has reached that point. Small groups and church communities can create safer spaces for people to admit their struggles, express their desire for freedom and sit honestly with the tension of an ongoing battle. When people are free to grieve without judgment, they may also find the courage to be truthful. As Scripture says, “Weep with those who weep.” Confession: I acknowledge that sex is sacred and designed by God for divine purposes. By His grace, I will honour and uphold its sanctity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
