IMF Ranks Nigeria Among Top Five Sub-Saharan Countries for AI-Driven Growth

A new IMF report lists Nigeria as one of the five Sub-Saharan nations best placed to reap the rewards of artificial intelligence. The country joins South Africa, Mauritius, Botswana and Namibia at the top. The report highlights Nigeria’s large workforce in finance, ICT and professional services. These sectors are set to experience the strongest AI-driven productivity gains. However, weak infrastructure, unreliable power and limited technical skills could hold back adoption. The IMF urges investment in digital networks, training and governance to bridge these gaps. It projects that AI could raise productivity across Sub-Saharan Africa by 0.2–2.1% over the next decade. Meeting the report’s recommendations could add nearly half a percentage point to annual growth.
