South African Toddler Reunited With Family After Being Stranded in Nigeria
A three-year-old South African boy has returned to Johannesburg after being stranded in Nigeria when his mother was arrested at Abuja airport over an alleged drug offence. Authorities reportedly found 5.75kg of heroin in the 38-year-old woman’s luggage after she arrived from Doha in July 2026. She was later sentenced to a lengthy prison term, reportedly 25 years. South African diplomatic staff in Nigeria raised about 25,000 rand to cover the child’s journey. A diplomat accompanied him from Abuja through Lagos to Johannesburg, where he reunited with his grandfather on 26 September.
