Human Rights Group Condemns Public Flogging of Woman in Libya
A woman was publicly flogged in Sabha, southern Libya, after a conviction for zina, a term used in Libyan law for sexual relations outside a legally recognised marriage. Footage of the punishment, reportedly carried out by the local Judicial Police, has triggered condemnation from human rights groups. The video shows a man reading what was presented as a ruling from the Sabha Criminal Court before an officer repeatedly struck the woman. She was seated on the ground with her face and body covered, while security vehicles stood nearby. Libya’s National Institution for Human Rights condemned the incident as humiliating and discriminatory. The group said the punishment appeared to breach legal safeguards, which require a final judgment, a medical examination and execution inside a police station with a prosecutor and doctor present. It also questioned why the woman was allegedly punished without her partner.
