Pope’s Surgery Rekindles Debate on Faith, Miracles and Medical Care
The Pope’s successful surgery has renewed debate over whether faith should discourage believers from seeking medical treatment. I believe prayer and medical care can work together, because no one can dictate when or how a miracle will happen. Miracles do not remove the need for doctors, hospitals and medical science. Many people live longer today because of trained health professionals, research and access to proper treatment. Nigeria needs affordable, functional healthcare more than countless claims of healing. Religious leaders should not mislead followers into avoiding check-ups or treatment while privately relying on medical care themselves. For me, giving thanks to God for recovery should also include appreciating doctors, scientists and health workers whose skills help save lives.
