English Football Proposes One-Minute Exit Rule for Goalkeeper Injury Stoppages

English Football Proposes One-Minute Exit Rule for Goalkeeper Injury Stoppages

English football authorities are seeking approval to trial a rule aimed at stopping goalkeepers from using injury stoppages as tactical timeouts. Under the proposal, when medical staff enter the pitch to treat a goalkeeper, the manager must choose an outfield player to leave the field for one minute. If no player is nominated within 10 seconds, the captain would have to leave automatically. The FA, Premier League, EFL, National League and Women’s Super League support the trial, but IFAB approval is still required. If cleared in time, it could first be used in Saturday’s Carabao Cup preliminary-round match between Tranmere Rovers and Rochdale. The move follows criticism that some keepers use injury breaks to slow matches and allow tactical instructions from the bench.
