Edo Shuts Benin Hospital Allegedly Operating Without Registration for 10 Years

The Edo State Healthcare Regulation and Monitoring Agency has shut down Jess Royal Hospital in Benin after officials allegedly found that it had operated for more than a decade without registration. During an inspection, the agency said the facility was not registered with the state Ministry of Health or EDOHERMA. Officials also reported poor infection-control measures, no evidence of fumigation or pest control, and the absence of a serviceable fire extinguisher, emergency plan and referral system. The inspection reportedly found deteriorated ward equipment, damaged mattresses and unsanitary conditions. The hospital owner said ill health had delayed the registration process. The agency ordered all medical activities to stop immediately. It gave the facility 14 days to begin registration and address the identified safety, equipment and sanitation gaps before any possible reopening.
