Tinubu Signs NIMC Act 2026 to Establish One Digital ID for Every Nigerian
On 26 June 2026 at the State House in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu signed the NIMC Act 2026 into law. It replaces the 2007 framework and creates a comprehensive digital identity system for all citizens. The Act mandates user consent for data access and restricts use to specified purposes. It makes the National Identification Number compulsory for services like banking, passports, land transactions and telecom. It also introduces a General Multipurpose Card and enforces a one-person, one-number policy. The Minister of Interior noted that linking NIMC’s database with immigration and Interpol helped secure the arrest of seven returning terrorists in Katsina. The automated system aims to boost internal security and improve access to government services. NIMC now has court-authorized powers to investigate offences, seize evidence and arrest suspects. Penalties for identity fraud, multiple registrations or impersonation carry a minimum five-year jail term, with corporate offenders facing fines up to ₦20 million.
