When Pilate Sentenced Jesus to Be Crucified (John 19:1–16)
Pontius Pilate ordered Jesus to be flogged and mocked by soldiers. They placed a crown of thorns on his head and dressed him in a purple robe, taunting him as “king of the Jews.” Pilate declared he found no basis for a charge against Jesus and presented him to the crowd. The chief priests demanded crucifixion, citing the law that anyone claiming to be the Son of God must die. Pilate questioned Jesus about his origin and power but received no answer. He recognized Jesus’ authority came from above and sought to free him. The Jewish leaders accused Pilate of opposing Caesar if he released Jesus. Facing mounting pressure, Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified at the place called Gabbatha. The crowd cried, “Crucify him!” and Pilate delivered Jesus into their hands.
