El-Rufai Trial Update: Lead Counsel Renounces Three Recusal Motions

The ICPC says its prosecution of former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai saw a twist at the Kaduna State High Court. Lead defence counsel Paul Erokoro, SAN, disowned three separate motions seeking the recusal of the trial judge. He described them as combative and asked permission to file a fresh application. The ICPC did not oppose the request and the court adjourned the matter by consent to July 22, 2026. El-Rufai faces charges of abuse of office, diversion of public funds and other corruption offences.

I was just thinking the same. It's curious, but maybe they realized contesting the judge isn't worth the hassle.

It's unusual for a lead SAN to distance himself from combative motions after filing them, raising doubts about the defence strategy.
