Ibrahim Mbaya’s Death Renews Calls to End Jungle Justice in Nigeria

Ibrahim Mbaya, a 25-year-old University of Jos graduate and fashion model, reportedly died on July 26 after he was accused of stealing an iPhone at a friend’s home in Jos. He had stayed there overnight after attending a campus social event. A video of the incident reportedly shows Ibrahim being beaten with whips and wooden planks while pleading for his life. The Plateau State Police Command said he was declared dead on arrival at Jos University Teaching Hospital, and three suspects have been arrested. His death has renewed outrage over jungle justice in Nigeria. Similar cases include the Aluu Four killings, the lynching of 16 travellers in Uromi, the killing of Deborah Samuel Yakubu, and the reported lynching of a woman accused of child theft in Kaduna. Mob violence is a crime, not justice. Authorities must investigate and prosecute those responsible, while citizens should report allegations to the police instead of joining or enabling violence.
