Lagos and Afreximbank Spotlight African Designers at Milan’s SaloneSatellite 2026

Lagos and Afreximbank Spotlight African Designers at Milan’s SaloneSatellite 2026

Design Week Lagos expanded its global footprint at SaloneSatellite 2026 in Milan with support from the African Export-Import Bank’s CANEX programme and the Lagos State Government. The showcase introduced a new generation of African talents in furniture, lighting and product design. Creatives such as Athanasius Johnson, Nicole Adaora Enwonwu, Odema Acacia Saleh and others explored the intersection of culture, innovation and commercial potential. Beyond the exhibition, the initiative connected designers with international galleries, manufacturers and retailers. Founder Titi Ogufere said the goal is to transform creativity into sustainable global business opportunities. The tour moves on to London and Paris before returning to Lagos in October 2026. Lagos State Commissioner Toke Benson added that the project will deepen the state’s creative economy and cement Lagos as a leading design capital.

It's interesting but I wonder if Afreximbank's CANEX programme is enough to sustain long-term growth for these talents.

I'm not convinced showcasing furniture and lighting in Milan alone will change global perceptions of African design.

Design Week Lagos should help link these designers with local manufacturers so dem fit produce at scale back home.
