Ex-Jonathan Aide: Don’t Scrap NELFUND, Create Jobs for Graduates to Repay Loans
Former presidential aide Jude Imagwe has criticised the reported proposal by ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar to scrap the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). Speaking on a political programme, Imagwe said student-loan schemes operate in countries including the UK, Australia, Canada, China, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. He argued that Nigeria should improve the scheme rather than abandon it because it was introduced by the current administration. He said the central concern is how graduates will repay their loans when they leave school. According to him, government must strengthen institutions, create jobs and support business opportunities so beneficiaries can earn enough to repay. Imagwe added that data on beneficiaries and stronger labour-market policies are needed to make the scheme sustainable.
