Abuja Flooding Raises Fresh Concerns Over Poor Drainage and Rapid Urban Expansion

Flooding around luxury homes and estates in Abuja has renewed concerns about shrinking green spaces, blocked drainage channels and rapid construction across the Federal Capital Territory. Residents and urban planning experts say recurring floods may be linked to poor drainage, blocked waterways, weak enforcement of building rules and developments on flood plains or other environmentally sensitive areas. As open land is replaced by buildings and paved surfaces, rainwater has fewer places to soak into the ground. This increases runoff and puts more pressure on drainage infrastructure. The flooding shows that even high-value neighbourhoods are vulnerable when urban growth is not matched by sound environmental planning and protection of natural drainage corridors.
