Ukraine Drone Strikes Cripple Tuapse Refinery, Trigger Environmental Crisis
In April 2026, Ukraine launched multiple drone attacks on the Tuapse oil refinery on Russia’s Black Sea coast. The strikes ignited massive fires that have halted production since mid-April. A 7-kilometre oil slick spread over 10 square kilometres into the Black Sea. Heavy rains caused the Tuapse River to overflow, carrying petroleum downstream and contaminating the shoreline. Authorities declared a state of emergency and mobilised teams to extinguish fires and contain the spill. Despite these efforts, the slick remains and polluted air now threatens neighbouring regions. The operation highlights Ukraine’s strategy to weaken Russian energy exports, a vital source of funding for its war efforts.
