NAFDAC Says Enugu Corps Member’s Death Was Linked to Dehydration and Kidney Injury
NAFDAC says its preliminary investigation found no evidence that substandard or falsified medicines caused the death of a corps member at the NYSC orientation camp in Awgu, Enugu State. The agency said the corps member was first treated at the camp clinic for symptoms of severe malaria and was later discharged with oral medication. He reportedly returned days later with thigh pain, heavy sweating and low blood pressure. He was referred to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital after his condition worsened, including poor urine output and recurrent blood-pressure complications. NAFDAC said doctors suspected acute kidney injury caused by severe dehydration and shock, while laboratory tests on the medicines used are continuing.
