Why I Use “Chavvy” to Describe Performative Status Culture
I use “chavvy” to describe a style of performative status that I often see among some Nigerian men. It is about looking wealthy and important, even when the reality may be very different. The pattern can include flashy labels, imitation luxury items, expensive-looking phones and loud displays of money. The goal is often to be seen as a “big boy,” not necessarily to build real financial stability. To me, the issue is the lack of subtlety: branding, noise and public showmanship become proof of status. It is food for thought, not a claim about every Nigerian man.
