UNILORIN Study Warns of Metal Contamination Risk From Grinding Machines
Researchers at the University of Ilorin have warned that cast-iron grinding discs used in public mills may release metallic particles into staple foods such as maize. The study found that dry grinding could introduce up to 1.7 grammes of metallic contaminants into 10 kilogrammes of ground maize. The particles measured about 43 micrometres on average, making them small enough to be swallowed unnoticed. According to the researchers, dry grinding causes more wear than wet grinding because water reduces friction. Tests also showed that the particles can corrode in conditions similar to the human stomach. The team called for safer milling practices and stronger quality-control standards for grinding discs used in food processing.
