Tinubu Orders FCCPC to Probe Tech Giants Over Media Exploitation

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to investigate global tech firms over alleged anti-competitive practices and unlawful use of Nigerian news content. This follows a petition by major media bodies, including the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association, the Nigeria Union of Journalists and other press groups. The FCCPC will probe companies such as Meta, Alphabet and X, along with generative AI platforms, to determine if they abused market dominance or exploited copyrighted material without fair agreements. The commission’s Executive Vice Chairman, Tunji Bello, said the inquiry will be transparent and evidence-driven, with all parties given a chance to respond. The probe will assess potential breaches of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018 and examine claims of unfair commercial terms. Similar action in South Africa led to a landmark deal for fair payment to local news outlets. The FCCPC aims to ensure a level playing field for Nigeria’s media industry and maintain fair competition in the digital space.

It's interesting that this probe follows petitions from major media bodies, yet enforcement by FCCPC often takes a long time.

I'm not convinced a government agency can rein in giants like Google or Facebook just with this order.

Media houses should prepare clear usage policies and track digital content to support FCCPC with detailed evidence.
