How a Nigerian Athlete Turned a Football Scholarship in Wales Into a New Life
A Nigerian graduate and former taekwondo athlete says he initially dismissed a football scholarship offer from Wales as a scam. The fully funded opportunity took him to the University of South Wales, where he earned a master’s degree while playing American football for the South Wales Warriors. He recalls adapting to a more tactical version of the sport, earning an MVP award in his first season and helping the team reach the playoffs. He has since built a career alongside football, moving from a receptionist role to working as an executive assistant with the NHS. He says life in Wales has given him stability, a supportive Nigerian community and a chance to support his family. However, concerns about insecurity, limited career opportunities and the state of sports development make him reluctant to return to Nigeria soon.
