APC Urges INEC to Bar Parties That Miss Membership Register Deadline
The All Progressives Congress has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to enforce the Supreme Court’s ruling on political parties’ membership registers ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party said any political party that fails to submit its digital membership register to INEC at least 21 days before its primaries, congresses or conventions should face the legal consequences. It argued that affected parties could be prevented from fielding candidates in the general election. The APC cited the Supreme Court’s September 24 decision in INEC v Zenith Labour Party, which upheld key provisions of Sections 77 and 84 of the Electoral Act 2026. The provisions require parties to use only the membership register submitted to INEC, with only listed members eligible to vote or contest in internal elections. According to the APC, the rules are intended to strengthen internal democracy and make party primaries more transparent and verifiable.
