Umahi, the Lagos-Calabar Highway and Questions Over Project Planning
Dave Umahi’s record as Ebonyi State governor is often linked to major roads, bridges and the airport in Abakaliki. However, I believe the state could also have invested more deliberately in rice processing, packaging and agricultural value chains to create wider long-term jobs. I am concerned that Ebonyi’s borrowing and infrastructure spending may have left the state with limited fiscal room. The current administration, in my view, appears constrained by the cost of salaries and existing obligations. The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway has raised even bigger questions. Reports and public comments about possible route changes, project costs, engineering designs and environmental approvals deserve clear official explanations. If key approvals or designs were incomplete before major commitments were made, those responsible should be held accountable through a lawful investigation.
