Oyo Govt Clarifies 200 Amotekun Deaths Unrelated to Oriire Kidnapping

The Oyo state government has dismissed claims that 200 Amotekun operatives died in the recent Oriire kidnapping. The Information Commissioner warned politicians against politicising the incident. He confirmed that no Amotekun personnel died during the Oriire operation and that the only casualty was an injured operative who is recuperating. He explained that the 200 deaths recorded since the corps’ inception six years ago resulted from illnesses, natural causes, and security operations. He added that due process was followed in notifying families of the deceased. The commissioner highlighted that Amotekun is the best-funded and equipped security outfit in the South West, operating 181 vehicles, 450 motorcycles, and over 2,500 personnel. He also renewed calls for state police and heavier weapons to match those used by kidnappers.
