Five Ways Celebrity Culture Can Affect Young Girls’ Self-Image and Choices
Many young girls learn from the celebrities and influencers they follow. Even when they know online content is curated, constant exposure can shape how they see beauty, success, relationships and self-worth. First, unrealistic beauty standards can make girls feel that their bodies need fixing. Extreme dieting, cosmetic procedures and heavily edited images may encourage unhealthy comparison. The pressure to live a flawless, luxurious life online can also make ordinary life feel inadequate. Celebrity culture can also make smoking, risky behaviour, emotional oversharing and unhealthy relationship attitudes appear normal or glamorous. When private struggles are constantly displayed online, young people may feel pushed to seek validation from strangers or reveal too much of themselves. We should not leave celebrities to raise our daughters through screens. Parents and guardians need honest conversations about online images, self-esteem, privacy, responsibility and choosing healthy role models. What do you think parents can do differently?
