Why Atiku’s Lobbying in Washington Won’t Win Him the Presidency

Atiku Abubakar seems to believe Washington can do what Nigerian voters have refused: install him as president. Instead of rebuilding his party structure or selling a clear programme at home, his ADC campaign hired a U.S. lobbying firm to circulate Tinubu’s old American records to Trump officials and Congress. The Presidency swiftly released Trump’s praise for Tinubu’s leadership and security cooperation. Yet recent polls paint a bleak picture for Atiku. The ADC lagged in five of six FCT area councils, managed just 12,872 votes in Ekiti against APC’s 319,224, and failed to feature among top contenders in Ondo South’s senatorial by-election. His home-state machine has shifted toward the APC, and his once-powerful PDP network has scattered. Campaigning to Washington is no substitute for mass mobilisation. If Atiku truly wants the presidency, he must rebuild his party at home, win governors and by-elections, and present Nigerians with a serious alternative. No U.S. president can bypass Nigeria’s democratic process.
