Nigeria Police Officers Allegedly Kidnap, Extort NYSC Members
Recent reports reveal that certain Nigeria Police Force officers abducted NYSC members and demanded a ₦10 million ransom. In Edo State, five officers were dismissed for running a kidnapping syndicate in Benin City. They worked with civilians in a one-chance extortion scheme. Along the Abuja-Kaduna road, tactical units have arrested suspected kidnappers, but allegations persist that some officers were involved in extortion. The Inspector General of Police has reiterated a zero-tolerance policy and ordered the prosecution of any officer found guilty. Many Nigerians warn that unchecked abuses could turn the country into a “crime scene.”
