Edo Community Alleges Seplat Diverted Benefits From Seven Oil Wells to Delta
Orogho Community in Ugu Ward, Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State has accused Seplat Energy of assigning benefits from oil wells it claims are within its territory to neighbouring communities in Delta State. The community said it has petitioned the Edo State Boundary Commission, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, security agencies and other authorities. It alleged that the dispute has persisted since Seplat took over the facilities formerly operated by Shell in 2013. Orogho also alleged that it has not received compensation for the permanent loss of use of its land and that its share of oil derivation benefits is at risk. The community claimed that residents have faced restrictions while trying to access their farmlands. It called on federal and Edo State authorities to intervene, insisting that official coordinates held by the Edo geographic information system support its claim. Seplat had not responded to the allegations as of the time of the report.
