Forgery Claims Mar Ugochinyere’s Minority Leader Bid as House Sittings Turn Rowdy
Thursday’s plenary of the House of Representatives erupted into chaos over allegations that Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere’s endorsement by 60 opposition members was forged. The minority leader post fell vacant when Rep. Kingsly Chinda resigned after defecting to the APC to run for Rivers State governor in 2027. Deputy Spokesperson Rep. Philip Agbese raised a motion claiming some signatories received $50,000 to back Ugochinyere, insisting he never signed any list. Ugochinyere countered in a personal explanation, saying he won an overwhelming caucus vote with 61 genuine signatures and offered to present evidence and witnesses. Members’ voices rose, forcing the Speaker to call for order and schedule a dedicated minority caucus meeting. Further debate centred on House rules, with some senior lawmakers questioning Ugochinyere’s experience and urging deletion of the endorsement record. The Speaker maintained that the matter would be fully discussed at the caucus before any decision.
